During a discussion on the mailing list about containers for hammers, mention was made of making a hammer tube out of PVC pipe. Paul Jewell remarked that, had he thought of it, he would have built a hammer case into his PVC HD stand. Well, that prompted several requests for pictures and/or description. I suggested he send them to me and I would put them up. Well, here they are.
Here is the basic stand. I think this is 25mm (about 1 inch) pipe and fittings. You could probably get away with 3/4-inch stuff, and for a small hd, maybe 1/2-inch would work, but might be too wimbly.
To pretty things up, you may want to drape some cloth over it. If you like the white pipe, you can remove the printing with PCV cleaner or acetone.
If you leave some of the joints unglued, it folds up quite nicely.
If you glue only the horizontal parts to the joiners (the Tees), it comes apart to go into a bag. That way, the stand won't fall apart when a dulcimer is on it.
