Well, I was actually dragging my feet hoping that Lindsay Haisley
would jump in here. He is the keeper of the machine on which this
list runs. I will muddle through what I understand of it the best I
can.

It all has to do with DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication,
Reporting & Conformance). It came out in 1975 and was embraced by
AOL, Yahoo, and a few others to thwart spam. The problem is that it
broke most mailing lists. In a mailing list, a sender, say,
joan@domain.tld sends email to the list. The list software on
hammered-dulcimers.org sends it out to the membership pretty much as
is. At the receiving end, the email has "joan@domain.tld" in the
From: line, but comes from a server at hammered-dulcimers.org. Now
that looks like the same pattern as the way a spammer sends mail
through a compromised server or a botted computer.

The solution was to encapsulate the posting inside an email directly
from hdlist@hammered-dulcimers.org, which matches the server name.

That's a quick and dirty explanation, but it's the best I can do.
