Hi Joanne,
Thanks for telling us about your hammered dulcimer that's for sale.
However, just so you know, the photos you included actually show a Dusty Strings D-500 hammered dulcimer, not a D-550.
There are two ways you can verify this: 1) look inside your dulcimer's sound hole, & the label will say D-500. And 2), you can go to their website & click on "hammered dulcimers," then "browse dulcimers," & then click on the "D-500" & "D-550" models.
You'll see that where they differ is on the left-hand "super-bass" bridge. The D-500 has 3 courses of strings on the lower left bridge adjacent to the long side of the instrument (like your photos); the D-550 has 8 courses in the same place. What difference does this make? The 5 extra low notes give the D-550 a 3 1/2+ octave range (starting on G2 & extending to E6), whereas the D-500 has a 3+ octave range (starting on D3 & extending to E6).
All the best,
