    You don't need any certificate to play music for folks on Hospice ,  Most folks enjoy Gospel Music ,  But if they are able to tell you and you can just ask them what they would like to hear. They do appreciate hearing pleasant music . 

   A friend of mine that plays guitar with our Dulcimer group Had a operation just before Christmas . and she is nor completely awake from surgery yet . She has been in a coma ever since December . , I took a psaltery and went and played for her . the nurce said it would be  O K .

   after playing by her bed side for about 30 minutes . the nurse on the Monitors told me that was the Best her vital signs had been  Ever since surgery about 8 weeks before that .  She was the  most   relaxed than she had been ever since the operation .  Her breathing came easier ,  Just contact Hospice and see if their is  any one they would let you play for .  Phil Belcher

Might you have any other suggestions for those of us volunteering for music/sing a longs/performances in Assisted Living/Hospice/Memory Unit facilities?

I spend much time resourcing selections I hope people will relate to and play them LOW as most older people -me included- don't sing high as well as 40 yrs ago.

The Mystery of Modes is coming to Downers Grove, IL - just west of Chicago, November 4-5!

This workshop will focus on really understanding the difference in sound and chord progressions between modes, how to take a tune and use it to transition into another mode, and improvising off the chordal structures of the different modes, plus a few good pentatonic scales and and use of a lovely  ostinato bass.  Mixolydian and Dorian modes (and comparing them to major and minor) will be the main focus, but there will be a brief overview of Lydian and Phrygian too.  

This workshop will:

• help Celtic and Old-timey musicians understand the scales and chords used in traditional music

•give the musical foundations needed for aspiring therapeutic musicians

•further enhance the musical tools for certified therapeutic musicians

The workshop is geared to hammered dulcimer and harp, but other instruments are welcome.  This will be a non-residential 2 day workshop for commuters. The workshop offers 10 CEUs for CMPs for a small additional fee.
