I have flown several times with my Meadowlark. Southwest has better overhead bins. It fits into the overhead bins just fine. I would put a small bag under it to tilt it up to reduce opportunities to lay something on top of it.

Hi folks,

I have a couple gigs coming up where I?m going to fly with my hammered dulcimer. I heard from somewhere that you can just buy an extra ticket and put it in the seat next to you. Has anyone done this and does it need to be with a certain airline? Can you direct me to any resources?

Thank you,
Ted Yoder

It will be interesting to see if there is any experience buying a seat.
They will not let you keep something small like a purse in the seat next to
you if it is empty so I'm thinking they would take exception to a
Dulcimer.  Anything that can turn into a projectile has to be stowed.
Don't think a lap belt would be enough to secure it to the seat adequately,
I bet you would get pushback from the crew.

I have done this before with Southwest between Chicago and Atlanta. You would call the number of the airline you are flying with in order to get the ticket together. It worked great with southwest, but I?m not sure how other airlines are with it. As far as securing your dulcimer, do you know those seat belts the flight attendants use to show you how to buckle up? They are actually extenders meant for the heftier customers of the airline. One of those, and the dulcimer is secure (I did this with my Cloud Nine 17/16/8). You might get a little bit of grief from the employees as you take your instrument onto the plane, but stand your ground. Aviation law has got your back: they have to let you take it on. Here are some pictures from when I flew. https://1drv.ms/f/s!AmVUD7V-gMBvgXI-GIUTt76Z3G8R
