St. Paddyâs Day is coming, and if you are playing a St. Paddyâs Day gig, here are some tunes you may not know yet. If you have never played a St. Paddyâs Day gig before, you should seriously think about it. Everyone should do it at least once.
The Battle of Aughrim dates to the 1690s battle. But the tune was orchestrated and used extensively in the 2013 movie âThe Lone Rangerâ starring Johnnie Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer as the Lone Ranger. If you want to play Billy Tell OâVerture for St. Paddyâs, thereâs a link to that, too.
Three others are new to the site. âColeraineâ - a high energy jig in Am, Easy You Rogue, Stop - a rolling D major double jig written by the piper John Murphy and published in 1809; and âOff She Goesâ which is pretty widely known (with lyrics).
There are also several other Irish tunes: âGet Up Earlyâ, "Blarney Pilgrimâ, "Father OâFlynnâ aka âTop of Cork Roadâ, Ballykeel Jig, The Irish Jigg (early 1700s - with parental advisory), Irish Ho-Hoane (from the 1500s) and The Night Before Larry Was Stretched. Plus links to even more.
For the Green Beer Irish, a few that they will recognize: âIrish Washerwomanâ, and two from American Irish theater - âMy Wild Irish Roseâ and âWhen Irish Eyes Are Smilingâ. At the last St. Paddyâs Day gig that we played, these tunes, plus âDanny Boyâ were the only things the crowd recognized as Irish. Perhaps if we had played Billy Tell OâVertureâ.
