Well… yes Ted.  It’s obvious both instruments have a common ancestry – wood… and a block of it at that… don’t think anyone can put on aires here (though they both could certainly play one)…

So Norm, are you saying that we could put strings on a block of wood and calm it a MD? :-)

Actually Ted, the Swiss word “Sheitholt” literally means a ‘block of wood’ …hope this allows you to rest easy and enjoy the upcoming holidays…

That’s not fair George. Why don’t mountain dulcimers have names that mean they make no more noise than a blade hitting a wood block? :)

If anyone is looking for gifts for the other musicians in your family, please check out my current stock page. I have plenty of two octave zithers, bowed psalteries, thumb pianos, Appalachian dulcimers, and a huge selection of new and used hammered dulcimers. Plenty of accessories as well including two reasonably priced adjustable hammered dulcimer stands; a kit and finished stand.  For the non musicians, I of course have my usual cutting boards. http://jamesjonesinstruments.com/misc/current_stock.html
