That instrument correctly spelled is a Hackbrett which I misspelled in the first sentence. My trapezoidal shaped instrument has four sets of strings per course. The strings are arranged by ascending half tones, alternating on the left and right side of the instrument. There is only one note for each set of strings (although I guess you could also choose to play the short string lengths between the tuning pins and the bridge). Therefore, there are just two bridges for the instrument, one running up each side of the instgrument. My instrument has 32 notes running
from a low G to a high D and I've only ever played one song that required just one additional note a half step away if the key is changed (33 consecutive half tones). I enjoy playing this instrument because it is fully chromatic and the notes are
arranged in ascending order as they are on a piano, but of course the piano keyboard has artificially created the black keys for sharps and flats. There are also some more traditional hammered dulcimers using this string arrangement although it's not that common. Please correct me where I have misunderstood. Cimbalom casing is generally a rather heavy solid construction, intended for permanent floor stand mounting. This is due to the high tension stress requirements of 4-string courses of relatively low-guage (thick) strings. The tone resulting is more metallic and piano-like. The casement appears to be 4-8 inches thick. Range is designed to be extensive (more than the HD) from c2 to d6 chromatically. I have been unable to find any good documentation on either string layouts or general
construction of an
instrument on the internet (at least using the english google search engine). Cimbalom always has dampers because the rigidity of the instrument case/soundboard results in high sustain duration._______________________________________________ Hdlist mailing list Hdlist@hammered-dulcimers.org http://www.hammered-dulcimers.org/mailman/listinfo/hdlist _______________________________________________ Hdlist mailing list Hdlist@hammered-dulcimers.org http://www.hammered-dulcimers.org/mailman/listinfo/hdlist _______________________________________________ Hdlist mailing list Hdlist@hammered-dulcimers.org http://www.hammered-dulcimers.org/mailman/listinfo/hdlist |
