I have seen that soundboards are normally braced beneath the bridge. Some directly below it, others following Sam R's recommendations of two braces on either side of the bridge.

I have seen several of the documents providing the formulae for determining the tension of strings and can use the laws of mechanics to calculate the force of the wire on the bridge given knowledge of string guage, tone length, and several other criteria in the formulas.

Is there any documentation on the elasticity of wood panels? Specifically at .25, .375, and .5 inch thickness? All the hardness data I've seen for the various species is relative to the impact of a steel ball and does not address the ability of the wood to support a load while rigid or the amount of deflection expected ...

Solid as well as plywood would be of interest.


There seems to be a industry-known threshold where enough strings across enough distance *should* dictate increasing the thickness of the soundboard. Or is this all experimentation by each Luthier?
