Have I missed it or has no one mentioned flight cases? James Jones sells telescoping models which although not ATA approved, certainly should do the trick. Check his web site for details.

I used to fly occasionally with my small-ish HD as carry-on. I
always looked for flight that used one of two types of aircraft that
had overheads that it would fit. But that was VERY risky.

1. You have no guarantee that they won't change the aircraft without notice.

2. Depending on when you board, the overheads may be full. Many
flights these days are 100% full and they don't look kindly to big
items in the overhead. They weren't as crowded when I was flying with my HD.

3. I'm pretty sure that the flight crew can say NO at any point for
any reason.

If any of those events happen, you are screwed. You have a HD in a
soft case that is definitely not suitable for the baggage hold. So
you either risk it as checked baggage, or you don't fly. Neither is
very desirable.
